Before I begin this post I would like to extend a huge thank you to Jeff & Pia Taylor for giving me tickets to the game as a late grad present, I had an amazing time and I really appreciate the kind gesture.
Last night was my first time back at Nationals Park since Memorial Day weekend in 2015, and I picked a great game to go to. Not only was it my first game of the 2016 season, I got the chance to bring a fellow Dayton Flyer to her first ever Nats game! Audrey Arbogast and I (pictured to the right) as well as my siblings, got to enjoy a beautiful night at the ballpark.
The game started shortly after 7PM under a setting sun that brought a pleasant warmth that has been lacking from this area in the past few weeks. A perfect night for baseball weather-wise was accompanied by the smell of hot dogs and the yell of vendors selling cold beer and peanuts. It was truly a picturesque night on the banks of the Anacostia (If that is even possible.)
The game on the field was just as good as the weather it was played in. Nationals starting pitcher Joe Ross took the mound and coasted through his first three innings without a blemish, until Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz smacked an 0-1 breaking ball into the Cardinals bullpen.
While the Cardinals fans in attendance rejoiced, I turned to Audrey and said "don't worry Bryce Harper will homer tonight."
Sure enough in the bottom of the 6th inning, the reigning NL MVP stepped into the batters box and launched a 437ft rocket off the facade of the third deck tying the game at 1. The homer was the furthest I have seen hit at Nats park since Adam Dunn hit a similar bomb while wearing the curly W. During the pandemonium that ensued as Harper trotted around the bases, I simply stood there and said "I called it."
The dingers did not stop there for the S Capitol Street sluggers. Shortly after the last words of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" rang out over the crowd, Danny Espinosa crushed one into the second deck just over the Nationals bullpen giving the home team a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
