As another MLB season gets underway, I thought that now would be as good of a time as any to get back into producing content for my sports blog. I know some games have already been played, but I am going to give my predictions for each divisions champions, as well as the award winners for the year. At the end of the year I will come back and analyze my picks to see how well I did, as long as I pick the World Series winner correctly I'll be happy.
American League East: Boston Red Sox
With the addition of Chris Sale, the Red Sox have an exceptional pitching staff that will look to shut down their AL East counterparts. With Mookie Betts and company launching homers over the Green Monster, the Red Sox could be a dangerous team come playoff time.
American League Central: Cleveland Indians
The Tribe made an incredible run in the postseason last year, and it took an even more incredible comeback by the Cubs to prevent the Indians from being World Series champions. The team is finally healthy, the addition of Edwin Encarnacion, and a full season of Andrew Miller have Tribe fans excited about this season (trust me, I live with one, they are pumped and they should be)
American League West: Houston Astros
The Astros feature some of the best young talent in the league with Carlos Correa and George Springer, but they will have to fend off a much improved Seattle Mariners team that is looking to take the top spot in the division. This could wind up being one of the closest races in the American League.
American League Wild Cards: Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers
It is no secret the animosity that these two teams share for each other. If this match up happens again, tempers could flare come playoff time. Also look for the Mariners and Orioles that will be vying for a spot in the Wild Card game.
National League East: Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper will have an MVP caliber season, and the movement of Trea Turner from center field to short stop will spark the Nationals offense that was stagnant at times last year. With Strasburg, Scherzer, and Roark all healthy, this Nationals team could be poised to finally break through the first round of the playoffs and make a deep run.
National League Central: Chicago Cubs
This division won't even be close. The Cubs will dominate from start to finish and finish on top of the NL Central standings once again.
National League West: Los Angeles Dodgers
Clayton Kershaw is the best in the business, and 2017 should be no different. The Rockies and Giants will be giving the Dodgers a good run for their money but I believe the Dodgers will win the division by only a game or two.
National League Wild Cards: San Francisco Giants and New York Mets
These two teams will both have very strong seasons, but playing in the same division as the Dodgers and Nationals will relegate them to a wild card spot. I can see Syndergaard having a Cy Young season, carrying the Mets into the postseason.
American League Rookie of the Year: Andrew Benintendi
The Red Sox slugger is poised for a big season, he even homered on Opening Day. Look for monster numbers from Benintendi this season.
National League Rookie of the Year: Dansby Swanson
Acquired in the Shelby Miller trade, Swanson is the shortstop of the future for the Braves. He will be a leader on that team for years to come and I believe this season he will come out on top among NL rookies.
American League Cy Young: Felix Hernandez
Hernandez has been consistently one of the best pitchers in the MLB, and 2017 will continue the trend as he will pitch the Mariners to their best season in years.
National League Cy Young: Noah Syndergaard
The hard throwing Met will have a career year and help the Mets snag a spot in the NL Wild Card round.
American League MVP: Manny Machado
The best third basemen in the MLB, Machado can do it all at the plate and in the field. Between him and Mike Trout, this could be a very close race.
National League MVP: Bryce Harper
Harper slumped in 2016 following his MVP 2015 season, and I believe he will return to his true form, and he is already on track after launching a massive home run on Opening Day.
American League Champions: Cleveland Indians
I am predicting the Indians beating the Red Sox in the ALCS, making it back to back years for the Tribe in the Fall Classic.
National League Champions: Washington Nationals
2017 will be the year that the Nationals break the slump of not making it out of the first round of the playoffs, they will top the Cubs in the NLCS sending Chicago into another 108 year drought.
World Series Champions: Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper will hit a walkoff home run off of Andrew Miller in game 7, sending D.C. into a frenzy, and bringing a title to the Nationals.
