It has been a while since I have updated my blog, and with a lot happening in the sports world I thought now is as good a time as there will ever be to post.
The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins are matched up in the second round of the NHL playoffs, and are arguably the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. Many people around the NHL were hoping that this series would happen in the Eastern Conference Finals, as opposed to the semi-finals, but a Crosby- Ovechkin series is never a bad thing.
These two teams have a built up hatred for the other, and this series has the makings of a seven game instant classic.
Game 1 featured a hat-trick from Caps forward T.J. Oshie, and Jay Beagle being a stick magnet. The game was close throughout, and if it is any indication of how the series will be, fans are in for a treat. Even though the game was sloppy for both sides, there were a plethora of hard hits and plenty of pushing and shoving after the whistle.
Three periods of hockey could not decide a winner of the game, and as the teams headed to overtime I sat in my dorm room glued to my 24 inch TV praying that for once, a DC sports team could come up clutch. American hero, T.J. Oshie made Caps fans rejoice as he took a puck from the blue line, skated into the Penguins zone, wrapped around the back of the net, and stuffed the puck (barely) under goaltender Matt Murray (no, not my younger brother) for the OT winner. Listen to the call of the winning goal from the Caps Radio Network here
As the only Capitals fan on my floor, nobody understood my excitement as I screamed and jumped up and down, but I understood. This team needed to come out and prove to themselves that they can thrive in the very same situations that they did not in years past. While it is only one game in a long series, it is huge.
I have seen this team lose those type of games far too many times, and it is refreshing to see them finally win one like that. Game two on Saturday in DC is going to be absolutely massive, if the Caps can pull out a win, and grab a 2-0 lead before heading to Pittsburgh it will put them in the drivers seat for making a push into the next round.
The biggest positive about my school getting out the first week of May is that I will be back home during the height of this (hopefully long) playoff run.
