There is a lot of debate these days as to whether or not college athletes should get paid, since I will be in college next fall I will share my opinion.
In this argument I am going to talk strictly about college football, for two reasons. First, because it is the most popular and revenue-generating college sport, secondly, nobody cares about the backup goalie for Eastern Wyoming hockey.
The past few years in college football have been more like a labor riot than a sports competition. From Reggie Bush to Johnny Manziel, and now Todd Gurley, college players are hunted down like Bernie Madoff.
My biggest point against players getting paid is the aspect that makes college football so great, the motivation and team bonding that college has. In the NFL, players hold out for huge contracts and it becomes more about them than the team. In college, the only thing that matters is winning and having school spirit. If money is thrown into the equation, there will undoubtedly be a change in recruiting and how a kid decides to go to a school *cough cough Cam Newton*. Although I do agree in theory it is unfair that a school can make millions selling jerseys and the athletes see none of that financial profit but they get it in other ways. If a school generates a lot of revenue, then they can improve facilities, equipment, stadium, etc. Also, it is only four years of a players life, they will have years and years to make money after college whether in the NFL or in a normal job setting.
Why does every little thing in this day and age become a huge social debate? These college athletes have it made, no student loan debt, they are fed and taken care of by trainers, yet they become greedy and want money. There are thousands of kids at those same universities that are working hard to pay for college and they are just happy to be there, meanwhile these potential millionaire football players whine about not getting paid. They signed up to play football in college, nobody is forcing them to play, if money is such a factor then don't play.
If you play college football in the state of Florida, you don't need money at all. Just walk into a store and grab some crab legs and hang out with some chicks. Instead of focusing on the money issue, the NCAA should be worried about the academic fraud at so many schools and how to handle those situations (Notre Dame is a positive example of that).
If anything, the kids should be paying the schools for allowing them such a unique opportunity, so many fans would give anything to have the player's opportunities.
No matter the situation, lets just be thankful Roger Goodell has nothing to do with college football.
Sorry for the gap between posts, its college application time for me. The closest I will be to an Ivy league is going for a walk in the woods, anyone know if ITT Tech has a golf team?
